From the famous Sonnenhuhr vineyard, meaning sundial. The vineyard was named after the clock at the top of the hillside which has been there since the 1840’s. Located on the famous blue slate of the Mosel, the site is 100% facing south which maximizes the heat available to the vines. Thus, each grape is allowed to reach full ripeness. German Wine Law sets ripeness levels in terms of the density of the grape must. This Riesling is determined to be of Kabinett ripeness. In simple terms, it is the level of sugar ripeness in the grapes, so as the scale increases, generally, so do the sweetness levels. The Kabinett is at the drier end of the sweetness scale.
Having said that, the wine is intensely perfumed and has a richness of body. It shows lots of stone fruit (nectarine, peach and apricot) as well as some lime and tangerine. The backbone of the wine is held together by taught, minerally fresh acidity. It is refreshing and satisfying. And is a perfect accompaniment to spicy Asian cuisine.
