Albert Bichot, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Out of stock
Clos de la Roche is the largest enclosed Grand Cru vineyard around Morey-Saint-Denis. Morey is sandwiched between the more famous, fuller, Gevrey-Chambertain and the, lighter, Chambolle-Musigny. All located on the same underlying stratum of limestone. However, the Clos de la Roche vineyard is comprised of more marl which gives the wine greater depth, concentration and longevity.
The hill of la Roche (meaning Rock), at its peak hits 300 meters above sea level, giving the Pinot Noir vines more exposure to the sun so as to ripen the grapes fully.
The grapes are hand-harvested and brought to Bichot’s gravity-fed winery where they are fermented in large conical oak vats. Fermentation takes place in two stages. The first stage is cool (14 Celsius maximum) and is meant to extract pure berry fruit characteristics. The second stage (between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius) is meant to extract body and tannin. The result is a wine that strikes a balance between these two – crucial – features of a fine wine. It is matured in 50-70% new French oak for 14 to 16 months and develops attractive baking spice and roasted coffee nuances. In addition, this is a perfumed and aromatic wine with anise, tobacco, forest floor, menthol and ripe red cherry fruit. A really robust and delectable wine. A pleasure to drink!
This is an outstanding wine from one of the world’s most famous vineyards that will develop in bottle for decades and prove to be a joy – God willing – when it is finally drunk.see less
