Dr. Loosen is one of the most respected producers of the Mosel valley. This is a wine from a single vineyard and is one of the flagships in his range. Erni Loosen only produces Riesling. The vines are staked on slopes so steep that parts of the vineyard can only be harvested by abseiling down rock faces! Dr. Loosen’s vines are some of a tiny handful of ungrafted vines in Europe, many of which are over 120 years old. Erdener Pralat is an entirely southern facing vineyard comprising of volcanic red slate that is unique to the Mosel. This produces wines of unequaled power, structure and concentration. It is truly a noble wine from a noble variety.

This is a jewel of a wine. Naturally sweet, but with a perfect balance of acidity to impart freshness to the wine. It shows intense stone fruit characteristics including tropical notes of pineapple, mandarin and honey. Riesling’s ability to age is often under-estimated and overlooked. This wine, albeit nearly 10 years old already is still in its infancy. However, over the coming years (nay, decades) it will slowly oxidize (but in a nice way!) and start to show nutty and dried fruit characteristics as well as some mineral, leather, and petrol characteristics. If that doesn’t sound appealing then that’s all the more reason to try this wine now, chilled with cheese, foie gras, or dessert. It will not disappoint.
