Finca Constancia Parcela 12 Graciano
Finca Constancia is a modern winery established in 2001 near Otero, Toledo in central Spain’s Castilla region. Ideally situated between the Montes de Toledo and Sierra de Gredos mountains. Viticulture here is very diverse with multiple meso- and micro-climates throughout each parcela spread across seperate areas of the vineyard.
The estate is split into 82 parcels or “parcelas”, each different from the other, planted with a selection of grape varieties that are harvested and vinified separately, facilitating trace-ability of the wines and enabling wines to be made from grapes grown on a single parcel. This approach also means that wines can be made in separate tanks, the quality of these grapes can be assessed and different growing and winemaking techniques can be trialed.
Finca Constancia have a very close relationship with the University of Toledo. Working together with Oenologist students and experts alike, there are a few single parcelas dedicated to experimentation and innovation. Aside from the traditional Spanish varieties, research is ongoing into international varieties, specific clonal selection and into vine resistance. This allows unconventional varieties such as Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to be grown. Thorough research into soil types, PH levels, weather & pest resistance has been made. Most importantly, identification into the vines of our future wines is essential in the wake of the advancing effects of climate change. Forward thinking and innovation is key alongside minimal intervention and reducing carbon footprints. Both of which Constancia practice.
The Parcela 12 is made up entirely of Graciano. Graciano, until recently was the colour and alcohol addition to the blend for Rioja in the north. Now, it is very much a stand-alone grape in it’s own right. The single parcela Graciano here is planted on granite soil which adds freshness and minerality to the wine. Matured for 8 months in French oak barrels, the wine has nuances of cocoa and balsamic with hints of sweet spice. This compliments the subtle floral notes and juicy fresh blackberry, plum and red cherry fruits. It is a powerful wine with a full body, smooth almost sweet tannins and an intense finish. Complex, elegant and fruit forward. Ideally suited to red meats, game and, of course, Jamon Iberico.
