Lidio Carraro ‘Da’divas’ Tempranillo
Lidio Carraro is a family-owned Brazilian winery founded by descendants of Italian immigrants devoted to viticultural tradition for over 5 generations. All of Lidio Carraro wines are made in the absence of oak. This allows the natural expression of the grape to express itself truly. All of the Carraro wines are part of the “Natural” wine movement, meaning that the human influence is kept to an absolute minimum with zero use of cultured yeasts, agro-chemicals, no additives, fining or corrective interventions. It is very much a movement that is an extension of both Organic and Biodynamic viticulture.
Brazil, as a wine producing country, are growing on the UK wine market and have been doing so slowly for the past few years. The vast majority of production is focused in the far south of the country in the province known as the Rio Grande do Sul which borders both Argentina and Uruguay. Lidio produces his wines in the Serra do Sudeste sub-region and the commune within that, Encruzilhada do Sul. Here, soils are predominantly sand and granite, which retains heat well which helps keep the vines warm when the temperature drops sharply at night. The Tempranillo vineyards are also of an altitude between 400 – 600 meters above sea level, keeping the acidity ripe alongside the warm and sunny days keeping the sugar ripe. Perfect balance, which is shown in the wine.
The grapes are harvested manually and transported at night in small boxes for processing in the winery. The fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, following traditional vinification with cold pre-fermentation maceration of 36 to 48 hours and with total maceration of 15 to 21 days according the parcel. After the malolactic fermentation, the wines were blended with regard to the unique definition of each parcel. The wine remains for another 10 months in the tank until bottling. The wine was not filtered in order to maintain its natural characteristics.
Coffee and lightly smoked toasted notes appear in the foreground, leading to strawberry jelly, dried fruit, fig, raisins, almonds, walnuts, chestnut and cocoa hints. This is a full wine with lots of elegance, structure, freshness and finesse. Brazilian wine at its finest.see less
