Paul de Albas Ribera del Duero
We are very pleased to have found this wine from Ribera del Duero. This region is one of the finest in Spain for the production of elegant, and age-worthy, red wines made from Tempranillo (called Tinta del Pais in Ribera).
This particular wine is made from fruit grown on 45 year old vines, from a single vineyard called Carrapeñafiel, harvested by hand, and fermented in temperature-controlled vessels to maintain the freshness of the fruit characteristics. The wine is left to macerate for two weeks after fermentation with gentle pumping over to extract ripe tannins. The wine is then matured for 18 months in French oak barrels from the Allier forest before ageing in bottle at the winery before release.
It is a refined wine that shows the typical black and red fruit character of gently ripened, well-chosen, and carefully vinified Tempranillo. It also shows notes of smoke and baking spice from ageing in oak, and starting to show some leather and tobacco from ageing in bottle. This is a wine that delivers unalloyed drinking pleasure – the current vintage is showing well 6 years after the harvest date, and will continue to show well for at least another 5 years.
