Wente ‘Morning Fog’ Chardonnay

This Chardonnay is named in honour of the famous Morning Fog that blankets San Francisco Bay on a daily basis. Yet, without this fog, viticulture would be very difficult and for some varieties, impossibly too hot. The gentle mist rolls in each morning, cooling the vines, whereby slowly it burns off so the grapes can get just enough sun.

The Wente family are highly regarded producers in California with Chardonnay being a specialty. The fifth generation producer is the oldest continuous producer in the USA, since 1883, dubbing them “California’s first family of Chardonnay”. The Wente’s developed the, now widely cultivated, ‘Wente Clone’ of Chardonnay. From all of California’s vineyards of the grape, 80% are the Wente Clone. A hugely influential and important wine producing family.

The wine itself, spends 5 months fermenting in a combination of neutral American oak and stainless steel. Therefore, the wine has great balance between a rich creaminess and texture alongside varietal fresh characters. Expect lots of pear, green apple, melon and citrus backed-up by some toast, vanilla and butterscotch. The wine is rich without being overt or audacious.
