Schnapps is often thought of as a liqueur but in fact it is a liqueur derivative. It is distilled from fruits, which are fermented with a base spirit, usually brandy, rather than adding the fruit after the distillation. Schnapps is usually stronger and less sweet than a liqueur.
Authentic schnapps has no added sugar and is an acquired taste but many brands of schnapps do have added sugar although they are usually not sweetened as much as a liqueur
