In 1985 after being ten years abroad Karl Heinz Johner and his wife Irene founded a little vineyard and winery in their home village of Bischoffingen in the Kaiserstuhl. His focus was set on the production of Burgundy-style wines, full of structure and pure elegance.
Despite having to overcome problems relating to winemaking in the Kaiserstuhl and German wine laws, Karl H. Johner is considered to be one of the best estates in Germany and is well-known amongst most wine experts.
The grapes used for this wine grow on the estates cooler Loess soil sites. Great care is taken in the vineyard’s management, with intensive manual vineyard work like de-leafing and reducing the crop levels. Picking and sorting is done by hand. Skin contact fermentation for 4 weeks followed by a maturing in used oak barrels for 15 months.
Pronounced red cherry aromas with a touch of bramble fruit and subtle notes of vanilla and oak on the palate. The acidity is typical for the vintage, making it feel youthful. Smooth tannins and lingering impressions of dark berries lead to an elegant, supple finish.
